Instant, Easy and Secure Payments Put Financial Services in the Hands of Ordinary Citizens

A Decade of Growth Gives UPI Global Recognition Across 11 Countries

NEW DELHI, August 25 (The Journalist Post):

India’s digital payments ecosystem has undergone a major transformation with the rise of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has made instant and convenient financial transactions accessible to millions of citizens. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has evolved over the past decade from a domestic payment platform into a globally recognised digital payments system, with its services now extended to 11 countries.

From Pilot Project to Mass Adoption

UPI began its journey in April 2016 as a pilot project involving 21 partner banks and was opened to the public in August that year. The launch of the BHIM app in December 2016 further simplified direct bank-to-bank money transfers. The introduction of dynamic QR codes in 2017 made digital payments easier for retailers and small businesses.

Over the years, UPI has become an important part of India’s financial ecosystem, supporting everything from small-value retail transactions to large digital payments.

Innovation Drives Expansion

To improve security and convenience, UPI 2.0 was introduced in 2018 with features such as mandates for automatic payments, overdraft account linking and invoice viewing. In 2019, SEBI permitted UPI for IPO applications, contributing to a sharp increase in transactions. UPI crossed the milestone of 100 crore monthly transactions in October 2019.

Services such as UPI AutoPay, UPI 123Pay and UPI Lite have further expanded digital payments among different sections of society. Credit-card integration, credit-line facilities and UPI Circle have added new dimensions to the platform.

Massive Growth in Transactions

UPI has recorded extraordinary growth in both transaction volume and value. Annual transactions increased from around 2 crore in 2016-17 to more than 24,162 crore in 2025-26, representing nearly 12,000 times growth.

During the same period, the value of transactions increased from approximately ₹0.07 lakh crore to ₹314 lakh crore. By July 2026, 741 banks were participating in the UPI ecosystem. In July alone, UPI processed 2,365.8 crore transactions worth ₹29.87 lakh crore.

India’s Digital Payment Model Goes Global

UPI has emerged as one of the world’s leading instant payment systems. Its share of global instant payment transaction volumes has reached 49 per cent, with the International Monetary Fund highlighting India’s digital payment success.

UPI’s international expansion, which began with Bhutan, has now reached Nepal, Singapore, the UAE, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece and the Maldives.

The rapid adoption of UPI has strengthened India’s digital economy while demonstrating how technology can make financial services faster, more accessible and more inclusive. Over the past decade, UPI has not only transformed the way Indians make payments but has also established India’s digital payment infrastructure as a model attracting global attention.
