Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Telangana State President N. Ramchander Rao on Wednesday claimed that the BJP-led Central Government had strengthened the future of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) by allocating the Tadicherla-II coal block, while accusing both the previous BRS government and the present Congress government of neglecting the public sector coal company and pushing it into financial distress.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state office in Hyderabad, Ramchander Rao expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy for the Centre’s decision to allot the Tadicherla-II coal block to SCCL. He said the allocation would significantly enhance Singareni’s operational capacity and secure the future of Telangana’s coal sector. According to Rao, SCCL currently operates 39 mines, providing livelihoods to nearly 31,000 contract workers and 41,000 permanent employees. He stated that the newly allotted coal block contains an estimated 182 million tonnes of coal reserves, is expected to generate more than ₹64,000 crore in revenue for SCCL, and create employment opportunities for around 1,200 youth.
Rejecting the Congress government’s claim that the allocation was achieved due to its efforts, Rao described the assertion as “completely false.” He questioned why the Congress had failed to secure the coal block for SCCL during the tenure of the UPA government led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He maintained that the allocation became possible due to the sustained efforts of BJP MPs, MLAs, district leaders, and the personal initiative of Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy.
The BJP leader further alleged that while the previous BRS government had used Singareni for its political interests, the Congress government was weakening the institution by diverting SCCL funds for unrelated activities, including football events. He also referred to the coal allocation controversies during the UPA era and claimed that the Modi government had introduced transparency and major reforms in the coal sector. Rao said these reforms had resulted in nearly a 70 percent increase in Coal India production and generated approximately ₹2.5 lakh crore in revenue for the country.
Responding to questions from the media, Ramchander Rao demanded that the scope of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Dharani land portal be expanded to investigate alleged irregularities in the Congress government’s Bhu Bharati portal. He claimed that around 2,000 fake accounts had surfaced within just two-and-a-half years of the Congress government’s tenure and called for strict action against all politicians and officials involved in the alleged land-related corruption. He accused both the Congress and BRS of acting together to divert public attention from these issues.
Rao also criticised the Congress government for repeatedly highlighting issues relating to Kannepally and Medigadda under the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, alleging that the government was creating political drama to distract the public from land-related controversies. He remarked that Kaleshwaram had been turned into “Drameshwaram” for political purposes. Recalling that the BJP had been the first party to demand an investigation into the Kaleshwaram project by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), he urged both the Congress and the BRS to put aside political interests and focus on repairing the irrigation project so that it could effectively serve Telangana’s farmers.
Concluding his remarks, Ramchander Rao warned the state government against indulging in politics at the cost of farmers’ welfare and asserted that the BJP would not tolerate any injustice to the state’s farming community.
