Alleges BRS Burdened Telangana with ₹8.5 Lakh Crore Debt During Its Decade in Power

THE JOURNALIST POST |
WANAPARTHY/GADWAL/HYDERABAD | July 8, 2026

Telangana Revenue, Housing, Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy on Wednesday claimed that while the previous BRS government burdened Telangana with ₹8.5 lakh crore in debt during its ten-year rule, the Congress government has sanctioned eight lakh houses in just two-and-a-half years under the Indiramma Housing Scheme.

Addressing public meetings in Wanaparthy and Gadwal, the Minister said the Congress government is fulfilling its electoral promises without misleading the people. He stated that 4.5 lakh houses were sanctioned in the first phase of the Indiramma Housing Scheme, while the second phase includes 2.5 lakh rural houses and one lakh urban houses under the CURE initiative, taking the total number of sanctioned houses to eight lakh.

Earlier in the day, Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, along with Ministers Jupally Krishna Rao and Vakiti Srihari, and local MLAs Megha Reddy and Krishna Reddy, laid foundation stones for a new Tahsildar Office building and a Venkateswara Temple in the two constituencies. The Ministers also distributed sanction letters to beneficiaries of the Indiramma Housing Scheme.

Paying tributes to former Chief Minister Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on his 77th birth anniversary, Ponguleti said the Congress government was implementing welfare schemes transparently and without corruption. He asserted that houses under the Indiramma scheme were being sanctioned and constructed without collecting a single rupee as a bribe.

The Minister said housewarming ceremonies had already been conducted for 1.35 lakh houses, while another 1.25 lakh houses had completed slab construction. The remaining houses, he added, are at various stages of construction across the state.

He explained that under the second phase, 1,500 new houses are being sanctioned in every Assembly constituency, along with 500 additional houses for families living in thatched huts to ensure they receive permanent housing.

Launching a political attack on the opposition, Ponguleti alleged that BRS leaders were unable to digest the pace of development under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and were resorting to baseless criticism. He said the Congress government was moving forward with the slogan “Farmer is King”, in contrast to the previous government’s policies. He also announced that a programme would be held in Khammam district on July 10 to release ₹9,300 crore for farmers.

Reaffirming his earlier commitment to adopt Wanaparthy, the Minister announced the sanction of a Press Club building and a Sub-Registrar Office building for the constituency.

Ponguleti said the government had identified nearly 32,000 families still living in thatched huts across Telangana and assured that Wanaparthy would be transformed into a constituency without a single thatched house through the Indiramma Housing Scheme.

He directed officials from the Police, Revenue and Housing departments not to create obstacles in the transportation of sand and soil required for house construction by beneficiaries. He also instructed officials to regularise Saada Bainama lands wherever farmers are in physical possession, obtaining approval from the Chief Commissioner of Land Administration (CCLA) wherever necessary.
